Hi,
I _think_ I found out, why movies encoded with dvd::rip using XviD are not
playing on the Philips DVDP 630/642. The error looks like this: when trying
to play a file the player reads the index and then skips through the video
but never shows a picture.
I tried to use the settings as described here:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/165637
and mentioned here:
http://www.exit1.org/archive/dvdrip-users/2005-08/msg00083.html
The critical setting for me was
"aspect ratio set to SQUARE"
I don't know how to do this with dvd::rip. An analysis of the encoded videos
with mpeg4modifier (under Microsoft Windows) always showed
Custom pixel shape (1:1 = 1,00000)
The custom aspect ratio "1:1" seems not to be the same as the aspect ratio
"square". I have no idea what this means, but changing the aspect ratio from
custom to square with mpeg4modifier made the videos playable on my DVP 630.
Even videos with a frame size of 720x576.

Could someone please explain to me how to achieve a aspect ratio setting of
square with dvd::rip? Or a way to postprocess the file under Linux so that
the aspect ratio is set to square?
Thanks and regards,
Horst
