This is what happens while transcode is working properly

The output you posted had the same dvd::rip Perl process (PID 6819) for
both situations (blocking, non-blocking). So *sometimes* even dvd::rip 0.98 succeeds? I thought dvd::rip 0.98 always fails while dvd::rip 0.52
always succeeds? Are you really sure 0.52 does *always* succeed?
Yes obviously the pid is the same, the first posted output is taken with "ps -AHf" at about 50% of the frame grabbing while transcode process is working properly, and the second output when the progress is locked at the end and transcode is stuck reading the whole dvd; but it is THE SAME frame grabbing process.
Sorry I didn't explained it so clearly.

dvd::rip 0.52 for me ALWAYS succeded while 0.98 ALWAYS blocks.
Currently there is a thread in transcode-users which seems to discuss the same problem. There the situation isn't really clear, it looks sometimes everything works well, sometimes not. Probably you want to take a look at it and check, how this compares to your sitation:

http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.video.transcode.user/cutoff=20317
(Subject is "ppm snapshot export problem")
The situation is different, in this thread it seems that transcode hangs completely but the pipe is still present

This is what ps shows in hung state:

 3109 pts/5 Sl+ 0:00 transcode -H 10 -o snapshot -y ppm,null -x vob,null
-i ..............

 3114 pts/5 S+ 0:00 sh -c tccat -i .... | tcextract -t vob -a 0 -x mpeg2
-d 0 | tcdecode -x mpeg2 -d 0 -y yuv420p

 3117 pts/5 S+ 0:00 tcextract -t vob -a 0 -x mpeg2 -d 0

3118 pts/5 S+ 0:00 tcdecode -x mpeg2 -d 0 -y yuv420p
while in my case transcode is not completely hung but it is waiting for tccat the read the whole dvd, and for me the only sub-process present is tccat, as I posted with ps in the previous message.

Thanks
Bye
Davide
