Hi All,
I'm fairly new to dvdrip, and am NO video engineer, but I'm quite pleased
with the quality of dvdrip,
its now my one-stop backup tool for my home/personal dvd/video collections.
In the past, on FreeBSD I used to use a handy little script:
dvdauthor -t -o /home/rick/movies -f 'streamdvd -i /dev/dvd -t 1 -s
0xe0,0x80 |'
dvdauthor -T -o /home/rick/movies
growisofs -Z /dev/cd0 -dvd-video /home/rick/movies
this would make a complete "raw" backup; not the most versatile, and now
8.5+Gig dvd blanks are rather expensive :)
I wanted to use dvd::rip to make a s flawless a backup as possible (
compressed on DVD-5 disks are fine) but when using transcode I noticed after
2nd pass completetion, the dvd-rip-info file showed 640x272 -sixe/resolution
?
-being from the 'ole school, the higher the resolution the better right?.
Example:
dvd::rip info (before transcoding, ...):
...
NTSC
23.976 fps
256614 frames
16:9
720x480 <-----------------------
...
dvd::rip info (after transcoding, ...)
...
Data source: DVD
[Video]
Video format: NTSC
FPS: 29.97
Size: 640 x 272 <----------------
Video bitrate (kbps): 3683
Video codec: xvid4
2-pass-encoded: yes
Fast resizing: yes
Deinterlacer filter:
Antialiasing filter: No antialiasing
[Audio 1]
DVD audio track id: 0
Language: en
Audio codec: vorbis
Channels: 2
Sample rate: 48000
Audio bitrate (kbps): 128
Volume rescaling: 1.000
Audio filter: None, volume rescale only
[Programs]
dvd::rip version: 0.98.2
transcode version: 1.0.2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I normally leave all the "defaults" -its seems to work best. however in this
case,
I wanted as high a BPP as possible, so I set the target size to just over
4Gigs, and set fps
from 23.976 (original) -> 29.92 thinkin this would also increase quality ?
In 2 cases for AVI, and OGM (ogg/vorbis) they both didn't get any larger
than 2.9Gig , ogg file format was substantially smaller, but the quality was
really good in both, with
ogg having a much deeper and richer sound quality than the avi. -personal
experience.
1./Does transcode retain the 720x480 sixe/resolution after the 1st clipping?
Meaning, is this all up to my (PC)Video Player software afterwards to sort
out, by simply changing the aspect ratio, ... in my player. ?
2./ am I reading the 640x272 correct as the final quality of the resolution
after the 2nd pass completion?
3./ Can I ?, or should I try to force the size to 740x480 to retain original
rez.?
4./ is this all due to my lack of experience using dvd::rip/transcode ?
-u dont have to answer this
:)
-Summarily, I'm not interested how big the final file needs to be (upto
4.5G), I just want as flawless a (dvd)backup as possible.
I know that "DVD supports video resolutions of up to 720x480 pixels @ 29.97
fps for NTSC and 720x576 pixels @ 25 fps for PAL.... even higher with
HD,..."
I've also read that:
"... increasing the source video resolution increases that amount of
information in the input,
therefore the video quality will suffer more as a result, unless you higher
the encoding bit-rate (if possible.)"
-Is this latter statement reflect the "trancode" limitations of preventing
any higher quality. ?
anyway, I'm sorry for the askin too many questions, any insight would be
appreciated.
thankyou,
Rick.
